Antonelli takes sensational home Italian GP win from back of grid

Kimi Antonelli produced a home-race breakthrough at Monza, winning the Italian Grand Prix from 19th to first on Sunday and delivering a major blow to Mercedes rival and teammate George Russell’s title challenge. The 20-year-old became the first Italian winner at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966. Russell, who led after a restart following Charles Leclerc’s heavy crash at the end of lap two, finished second 3.857 seconds behind. Antonelli and Russell swapped advantage after Antonelli pitted during a virtual safety car, while Russell stayed out. Antonelli then carved back the gap, passing on lap 51 of 53 after going into the gravel four laps earlier. Russell was unable to respond on worn tyres, while Max Verstappen finished third.
