Argentina Vs. Spain Could Be "The Greatest World Cup Final Ever", Senior NBCUniversal Telemundo Exec Says
Argentina vs. Spain’s World Cup final is being billed as potentially the greatest ever, with a senior NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises executive citing multiple audience-driving factors. Miguel Lorenzo, SVP of Sports Content, told Deadline that the pairing features two sides with large followings and deep history, and that Lionel Messi, now 39, is expected to widen global attention. On the Spanish side, Lorenzo pointed to Lamine Yamal as a breakout star often compared to Messi. He also noted the rarity of a final between the defending champion and the reigning European League winner, with both viewed as “odds-on favorites” going into June. The tournament’s U.S. footprint across 16 North American cities has already lifted soccer ratings, including Spanish-language semi-final audiences of 9.8 million for Spain–France and record totals for Fox telecasts. Telemundo plans its biggest production canvas, with correspondents from Spain and Argentina, alongside coverage from East Rutherford, New Jersey.
