Aston Martin's EV Plan: Build One When Forced To
xCruzo Brief
Aston Martin CEO Adrian Hallmark says the company will only build a pure electric vehicle when regulation leaves it no choice, arguing there’s no strong demand-driven reason yet to electrify. Speaking to Autocar, Hallmark said Aston’s EV timeline has slipped repeatedly: from a planned reveal by the end of 2025 to 2027, and now to a window around the 2035 legislative deadline. He suggested compliance “just before 2035,” with uncertainty between 2035 and 2033, but not as early as 2031. Hallmark wants to keep V-8 and V-12 engines on sale as long as rules allow, using hybrids as a bridge while avoiding plug-ins to avoid an extra 200 kg penalty. For electrification, Aston has agreements involving Lucid and Mercedes-Benz’s electric drivetrains.
