Audi R8 and Apple Watch designer reveals new off-road microcar
A Portuguese start-up, Amble, has revealed its new off-road microcar, the One, designed to reshape the L7e quadricycle segment with a sub-450 kg weight. The vehicle is homologated under the same L7e standard as models such as the Isetta-inspired Microlino and the older Renault Twizy, but it is intended for off-road use across varied climates and applications. Its design was led by Julian Hoenig, who previously styled Audi’s RSQ concept and the Mk1 Audi R8, and later worked at Apple leading the design of the company’s smartwatch. Hoenig said the project began after a request from a hotel-industry friend for a suitable golf buggy, leading to Amble’s founding when road-legal demand emerged. The One features open sides for easy hopping in and out, plus full weather protection including a canvas roof. Although L7e allows 56 mph, it will be limited to 40 mph, with work already under way on a more weather-protected next model.
