Battery durability exceeds expectations as replacement fears persist
Battery durability exceeds expectations as replacement fears persist, according to new performance data cited by the Wall Street Journal. The analysis from battery analytics company Recurrent says the average electric vehicle retains up to 95% of its original driving range after five years. It also reports that battery replacement requests have dropped sharply: only 0.3% of EVs built since 2022 required a battery replacement, compared with about one in 12 vehicles produced between 2011 and 2016. Improvements are linked to advances in battery chemistry, thermal management, and vehicle software. However, consumer anxiety over replacement cost remains a major adoption barrier, even as manufacturers increasingly design packs for easier, module-level repair. The report adds that battery prices have fallen more than 90% since 2010, while frequent high-power DC fast charging and regular charging to 100% can accelerate degradation. The findings arrive as U.S. EV sales slow following federal incentive rollbacks.
