Belgium top group with first win as Iran hold Egypt
Belgium secured their first World Cup win by defeating New Zealand 5-1 in Group G at Vancouver, finishing top of the group and booking a place in the knockout rounds. Leandro Trossard scored twice for the Red Devils, joined by goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Saelemaekers, lifting Belgium ahead of Egypt on goal difference. Egypt took second after drawing 1-1 with Iran in Seattle, while Iran finished third after coming from behind to hold Egypt. The match featured an early penalty appeal involving Trossard’s shot hitting Finn Surman’s arm, but VAR overturned the initial decision after the referee was sent to the monitor. Trossard made it 3-0 at the start of the second half, De Bruyne added a 66th-minute goal, and New Zealand’s Elijah Just replied for 3-1 before Lukaku’s 86th-minute strike restored Belgium’s top position.
