Charges expected for 18-year-old driver accused of striking NYPD officers with stolen SUV
Charges are expected to be announced Monday against an 18-year-old driver accused of striking multiple NYPD officers, including a sergeant, while driving a stolen SUV in the Bronx. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. Sunday on East Fordham Road after police received alerts from a license plate reader about a stolen silver Kia Sportage with New Jersey plates. Officers tracked the vehicle and surrounded it near 82 East Fordham Road after it pulled over. Investigators say the driver refused police orders to exit, instead moving the SUV back and forth and hitting officers. An officer then fired a single shot, striking the driver in the arm. The suspect is in stable condition at St. Barnabas Hospital and remains in custody, while a passenger is also detained; a third person is still sought. The injured officers were released after treatment. NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is reviewing the shooting, and the suspect faces additional felony charges.
