A 1943 penny is drawing major attention after being valued at as much as $235,000—and it could be sitting in someone’s change jar. The coin’s rarity comes from World War II copper conservation: most 1943 pennies were struck in steel, with more than a billion “steelies” made. But a few copper blanks remained in the presses and were struck with the 1943 date, creating a rare “bronze cent.” U.S. Coins and Jewelry in Houston recently acquired a PCGS-certified example it says has been in a Houston family’s possession since the 1960s, and it will be on display starting Saturday, Oct. 3.
