Chinese auto companies race ahead on EV technology, achieving 5-minute ultrafast charging

Geely Auto has unveiled ultrafast EV charging technology that can recharge a battery from 10% to 70% in 4.5 minutes, and from 10% to 97% in 8 minutes 40 seconds. The Hong Kong launch positions the Chinese automaker alongside BYD and CATL, which have also rolled out roughly five-minute “ultrafast” charging in recent months. Analysts said the pace matters because it narrows the gap with gasoline refueling and targets range anxiety. Experts cautioned that the real test is whether batteries can repeatedly accept high current without overheating or excessive degradation. Large-scale adoption may also hinge on expanding charging networks, since many public stations are below 1 megawatt.
