Classy stars with their classic cars

A look back at automotive tastes among celebrities highlights how classic cars became part of their public image—and sometimes their personal stories. The Rolling Stones drove a 1935 Bentley 3½ Litre, the first new Bentley model after Rolls-Royce bought the company in 1931. John Lennon’s 1966 Rolls-Royce Phantom V was delivered in 1965, damaged in 1966, then repainted yellow and customized with psychedelic artwork and extra equipment; it later sold at auction in 1985 for $2.3 million, and is now owned by the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria. The Beatles also appear via Lennon’s Triumph Herald milestone.
