Coroner's inquest into fatal police shooting of Surrey teen begins Nov. 9
A B.C. Coroners Service inquest into the fatal police shooting of 15-year-old Chase de Balinhard in Surrey is scheduled to begin Nov. 9. De Balinhard, who was autistic and had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), was shot and killed on Feb. 9, 2025, in the Clayton Heights neighbourhood while carrying a pellet gun that officers initially thought was a handgun. Police responded after the teen called 911, saying he was armed and threatening to harm himself, and Car 67—the police mental health outreach unit with a mental health nurse—was also dispatched. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. reported police tried to apprehend him for 22 minutes. IIO’s chief civilian director Jessica Berglund said there were no reasonable grounds to believe an officer committed an offence, and the matter was not referred for criminal charges.
