Day in the life of Congo's overstretched Ebola surveillance teams

In Bunia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ebola surveillance teams are running with chronic shortages and incomplete reporting as a major outbreak spreads across a 1 million-person area in 23 health districts. On one day, only four cars are available to move teams around the city, and they were all out when Dr Moubarack Kano arrived for work—so he drove himself in a white Subaru Forester. The bigger problem, Kano says, is that suspected cases are sometimes discovered only after transmission has already occurred, with clinics late to report and patients refusing testing. Government figures put infections at 3,200 and deaths at 1,405, with WHO suggesting the real toll could be two to four times higher.
