Fans furious as British Grand Prix finishes behind safety car in bizarre scenes
Fans at Silverstone were furious after the British Grand Prix ended behind a safety car in scenes described as bizarre, preventing a potential last-lap shootout. A record 175,000 supporters in the stands, with 564,000 total across the weekend, booed after the safety car remained out for the final lap despite indications from race control that it would be brought in. Charles Leclerc won for Ferrari, passing Mercedes’s George Russell following Max Verstappen’s crash with four laps remaining. Russell took second, while Lewis Hamilton completed the podium, but Hamilton was later facing investigation over an alleged yellow-flag infringement. Mercedes’s Kimi Antonelli suffered a mechanical failure on lap 41 and finished 16th after a five-second track-limits penalty. The FIA later said the “safety car in” message was sent in error due to a software issue.
