Fernando Alonso drops major hint over his F1 future ahead of Spanish Grand Prix
Fernando Alonso hints that the Spanish Grand Prix could be his final Barcelona appearance, as Formula 1 moves to a biennial schedule from 2027. The Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix will not be staged again until 2028, prompting Alonso to tell reporters that Sunday’s race is “probably going to be my last Barcelona race in Formula 1.” He stressed he is not announcing retirement, but the long gap before the next Barcelona event makes his involvement unlikely. The 44-year-old Spaniard, with two world titles in 2005 and 2006, has endured a subdued season with Aston Martin, scoring just one point so far and ranking 18th of 22.
Despite this, he remains one of the sport’s most celebrated figures, noting that his career achievements exceed his childhood dreams. Although he acknowledged the challenge of not winning races, Alonso said he is at peace with what he has accomplished and indicated that his future after this season will be decided in coming months, following the summer break.
