Ford recalls more than 250,000 Focus models because engines can stall unexpectedly
Ford is recalling 255,404 Focus automobiles from model years 2012 through 2018 after investigators found that a canister purge valve may malfunction, potentially causing the engine to stall while driving and raising crash risk. Dealers will fix the issue with a free powertrain software update, Ford said. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 6. Ford's recall number is 26S40, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's number is 26V369; the original NHTSA recall was 18V735. Vehicle identification numbers involved will be searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 6.
Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 for questions or to verify involvement; the update is provided at no charge and will be performed at authorized dealers.
