Former F1 champion Jones dies aged 80

Alan Jones, the last Australian and the first Williams driver to win the Formula 1 world title, has died at age 80. The racer competed in F1 from 1975 to 1986, winning the championship in 1980 as the first of Williams’ seven world champions. Jones recorded 12 grand prix victories and remained competitive in other motorsport categories until 2002. His wife, Amanda Butler-Davis, said he died on 5 November after a short illness. Jones began his first F1 race in a Hesketh at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix, earned his first win with Shadow in Austria in 1977, then joined Williams the next year. He also remains the most recent Australian winner of the Australian Grand Prix, in 1980 at Calder Park.
