xCruzo Brief

GM’s Ultium Cells has started producing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells at its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant, expanding its joint venture beyond electric vehicles into the fast-growing energy storage market. The facility now makes LG Energy Solution’s JF2 LFP cells for energy storage systems (ESS), supporting domestic content requirements for LG Energy Solution Vertech’s U.S.-made systems. Ultium Cells said it converted part of its existing capacity to LFP manufacturing in less than five months. The company expects the ramp-up to support growing demand for stationary battery systems used to store electricity for utilities, customers, and grid stabilization during peak periods. Ultium Cells also said the move helps meet fluctuating power needs of AI data centers and provides backup power. Ultium Cells President Injae Pahk and plant director Chris Desautels cited safety, quality and flexibility as production priorities.
