Harry Kane scores twice as England beat Congo 2-1 to reach World Cup last 16
Harry Kane’s two second-half goals carried England past Congo 2-1 and secured a World Cup last-16 berth after an early setback. Congo took the lead in the seventh minute through Brian Cipenga, who finished low past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after collecting a left-side cross. England responded after halftime when Kane headed in the equalizer in the 75th minute, assisted by Anthony Gordon’s left-wing cross; Lionel Mpasi got a hand to the attempt but the ball dropped into the bottom corner. Kane struck again in the 86th minute to complete the comeback. Congo threatened again, including a Yoane Wissa effort that hit the post before the break. England will face co-host Mexico in Mexico City on Sunday. Kane’s brace took him to five goals in the tournament and extended his England World Cup tally to 13.
