How Your Car Knows The Speed Limit Without Even Seeing A Sign

Modern cars can display speed limits and even adjust cruise control without always “seeing” a sign. Speed-limit detection typically uses a mix of technologies: a forward-facing camera for traffic-sign recognition, GPS positioning, digital map data, and software that fuses inputs. With camera-based systems, the vehicle identifies the sign’s shape and markings, then shows the limit on the instrument cluster or head-up display—often keeping the last recognized value. Maps and GPS can also work, since nav systems link road segments to their speed limits, letting a car show the limit soon after turning onto a new road. Because speed limits change and map data can go stale, newer systems increasingly combine camera readings with map information.
