Major update on MP 'hit by car' as suspect had her 'pinned against her vehicle'
Helen Haines, the Australian MP reportedly hit by a car, remains in critical but stable condition, and new witness accounts describe a second impact. Unconfirmed reports had suggested she suffered a leg amputation, but her condition status has not changed in official updates. The 65-year-old independent politician was struck Monday (October 19) outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria, by a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said witnesses reported the driver passed her SUV as she stood by the trunk, then returned and allegedly reversed into her a second time, pinning her against her own car. The 43-year-old driver remains in police custody. Albanese also praised local barber Ricky Jefferies, who searched the driver’s pockets and removed a knife; police later confirmed the knife was found.
