Man found guilty of murder in pedestrian crash that killed University of Delaware student in 2025

A Newark man was found guilty of murder in a pedestrian crash near the University of Delaware. Gordon Turner, 23, of New Castle, was fleeing police in a stolen U-Haul in April 2025 when he struck Marina Vasconcelos, 24, and critically injured another student on East Main Street near the campus. Turner was convicted on June 5 of first-degree murder, manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment, theft of a motor vehicle and other counts, according to the Delaware Department of Justice. He faces a minimum life sentence; sentencing has not been scheduled. The case renewed concerns about pedestrian safety and speeding near UD.
