McLaren target Austrian Grand Prix breakthrough with new rear wing test and fresh upgrades
McLaren is targeting a breakthrough at the Austrian Grand Prix after a mixed European start, aiming to convert momentum into performance at the Red Bull Ring. Following difficulties in Monaco and Canada, McLaren rebounded at the Spanish Grand Prix and believes its MCL40 is progressing as development continues into the 2026 campaign. For Spielberg, the team will bring a small, targeted update package focused on refinements around the rear corners, plus an experimental rear wing to be evaluated throughout Friday practice. Neil Houldey, Technical Director of Applied Engineering, said the short lap and tight tenths-separated margins make marginal gains important. Forecasts also suggest potential wet conditions in the Styrian mountains, offering early wet running data for teams with limited mileage under current rules.
