McLaren Wants A Lightweight SUV, But Hasn't Decided What It'll Be Made Of

McLaren has confirmed it will build its first SUV, targeting the Lamborghini Urus and Aston Martin DBX, but the company still hasn’t decided what the vehicle will be made of. McLaren COO Michael Straughan told Top Gear that the firm’s “DNA is carbon fiber,” yet carbon-fiber construction at SUV scale brings engineering and cost challenges. If carbon fiber can’t be made to work, aluminum is the fallback. The hybrid SUV is still expected before the end of the decade and will sit on a platform developed entirely by McLaren, using an in-house hybrid powertrain.
