Nearly Scrapped, Ford's Elusive One-Off V10 Mustang Roars Again

Ford has revived its one-off V10 Mustang prototype—known as the V10 Boss 351—after the experimental project nearly vanished from view. The Heritage Fleet team worked with engineers from the original development to get the car running properly again, starting with checks on electronics and other systems after years of sitting. During a dyno test, the V10-powered Mustang produced over 510 horsepower and 480 lb-ft (651 Nm) at the wheels, with Ford not quoting a crank figure. Using an estimated 15% drivetrain loss, that implies close to 600 hp at the engine. The all-aluminum, short-stroke DOHC V10 used new cylinder heads and camshafts and was built by grafting two additional cylinders onto a 4.6-liter Modular V8 architecture. It sends power to the rear via a six-speed manual. The car is now part of Ford’s Heritage Fleet.
