New EV 'that blows Renault out the water' will be UK's cheapest plug-in hybrid

A new BYD Dolphin G supermini from a Chinese manufacturer is expected to challenge the UK plug-in hybrid market by offering what Auto Express reports will be the country’s cheapest option. Availability is anticipated this summer, with a projected price of around £23,000, positioning it ahead of rivals such as the Renault Clio, Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Yaris in the B-segment. The model uses BYD’s Super Hybrid system, also referenced from the recently launched Atto 2 DM-i crossover, and pairs a 128bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine with two electric motors. The drive unit delivers 161bhp, while a generator supports the setup, and overall output plus battery size will vary by grade. Entry models are expected to use a 7.42kWh battery for up to 25 miles of pure electric driving, while Boost, Comfort and Sport versions are expected to carry an 18.3kWh pack for roughly 65 miles. BYD claims charging from a 7kW home wallbox will take under three hours and cites up to 646 miles combined range.
