Tire Jack Gets Axed: No Need For Jack To Change Tires Anymore
BYD's Yangwang U8 is introducing tire-changing simplicity through integrated hydraulic lifting instead of a traditional jack. The DiSus-P intelligent hydraulic body control suspension can lift each corner independently, allowing a tire to be removed without a separate jack. The giant SUV weighs about 3.5 tonnes and its price in China starts at around 1.1 million yuan, approximately US$150,000, placing it against premium rivals like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class or Range Rover. BYD also highlights that the suspension can help stabilize the vehicle during high-speed tire blowouts and even allow the car to continue driving temporarily after a puncture.
Similar concepts appear in other Chinese brands, such as the NIO ET9 with SkyRide and the suspensions from M-Hero, underscoring a trend in premium EVs to distinguish themselves with adaptive, self-elevating systems. The technology serves marketing as much as engineering, reflecting China’s fierce premium EV market and the demand for off-road capability in heavy vehicles. For now, the Yangwang U8 remains China-focused, although company statements hint at possible exports to selected overseas markets, including the Middle East and Australia.
