Norway takes first knockout victory | Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
Norway’s first World Cup knockout win arrived as Erling Haaland savored a historic 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast on Tuesday, which moves the team into a round-of-16 tie versus Brazil. In a match played at Arlington, Texas, Haaland’s decisive moment came in the 86th minute after a slight tap with his left foot. Antonio Nusa scored first for Norway with a curling kick in the opening half, and Amad Diallo leveled for Ivory Coast with a left-foot finish in the 74th minute. Norway survived pressure including a direct free kick by Diallo in the sixth minute of stoppage time, denied by goalkeeper Orjan Nyland’s final save. Coach Ståle Solbakken said the team avoided panic and regained its game plan after the equalizer. Norway’s next match is Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
