Polestar Banned from Selling New Cars in the US Starting in 2027
Polestar is set to be blocked from selling new cars in the United States starting with the 2027 model year, a move tied to federal connected-vehicle rules aimed at reducing risk from certain Chinese-linked technologies. According to Reuters, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security denied Polestar authorization under the Connected Vehicles Rule. The regulation, finalized in January 2025 during the Biden administration, restricts imports or sales of vehicles using certain hardware and software linked to China or Russia, including Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, cellular connectivity, and some satellite communications. The decision reflects Washington’s national security concerns and follows ongoing efforts to lessen reliance on Chinese automotive technology. Polestar says it will continue selling existing Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 models in the U.S. Polestar is majority-owned by China’s Geely, while Volvo received authorization in May, adding to industry uncertainty.
