A preliminary NTSB report says an Amazon cargo Boeing 767 overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sept. 6, killing five people in a van on the ground. The 12-page update, released Thursday, doesn’t identify a likely cause but details the landing and stop attempts. The plane touched down about 3,750 feet past the 9,360-foot threshold at roughly 160 knots (184 mph). It reached the end of the runway at about 130 mph, left the pavement onto grass, struck a cleanup workers van and an SUV, and stopped about 1,200 feet from the runway. The last recorded ground speed was around 75 mph after it crossed a perimeter fence. NTSB-reported flight recorder data shows speed brakes stayed stowed and thrust reversers weren’t deployed, while wheel brakes were applied and later released/reapplied with limited runway remaining. The two pilots weren’t seriously injured.
