President Donald Trump says he is OK with Chinese automakers building cars in US

President Donald Trump said Friday he would not oppose Chinese automakers building cars in the United States, despite opposition from U.S. lawmakers and automakers. In an interview on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle,” Trump said: “If China wanted to come in and open a plant to build their cars here, I'd be okay with that,” adding he believes the key point is that such companies would hire Americans. He also said he does not want Chinese automakers to build cars in Mexico and ship them to the U.S. Trump dismissed claims from Sen. Elissa Slotkin, a Michigan Democrat, calling them a “total phony rumor.” A Biden-era regulation from early 2025 effectively bans Chinese passenger vehicle makers, and Washington maintains more than 100% tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.
