Red-Hot RAV4, Toyota Hybrids Snagging Tesla Defectors, Says Edmunds
Red-hot RAV4 and other Toyota hybrids are drawing attention as Tesla defectors change course, according to Edmunds. While General Motors and Ford are scaling back EV ambitions, Toyota is expanding electrified offerings, with Chairman Toyoda focused on an electrified Corolla and additional electrified models. Edmunds data cited by the outlet shows Toyota’s position among Tesla trade-ins shifting sharply. In Q2 2021, Toyota was the seventh-most common brand purchased with a Tesla trade-in (6.9%), rising to the top beneficiary in Q2 2026 (17.3%). Edmunds says hybrid and plug-in hybrid purchases are growing fastest among those switching from Tesla. In Q2 2026, the share of Tesla defectors buying another EV fell to 22% from 40.2% a year earlier, while hybrid purchases hit a record 20.5%.
