Sainz to start home Spanish GP 20th after three-place grid penalty

Carlos Sainz will start the Spanish Grand Prix 20th on the grid after a three-place penalty for impeding Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas during Saturday qualifying. The FIA said Sainz, driving for Williams, unnecessarily held up Bottas through Turns 6 and 7 in the first qualifying phase. Sainz dropped to P20, while fellow Spaniard Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, Cadillac’s Sergio Perez and Bottas each moved up one position for Sunday’s 57-lap race—the first Formula One event at the Madring. Lando Norris set pole for McLaren, edging Kimi Antonelli by 0.011 seconds.
