Soaring toll of living in regions laid bare
Broome’s cost-of-living pressures are intensifying, with residents citing fuel and freight expenses, housing shortages, and uncertainty around labor arrangements. The region has about 18,000 permanent residents, but its service population typically swells to around 60,000 during the dry season due to tourism, seasonal work, and FIFO staffing. Kimberley Accommodation managing director Dannielle Hart told Sky News Australia that fuel prices and the cost of supplies are especially burdensome. Housing has become a central concern, with realestate.com.au reporting a median weekly rental price of $1,000 for houses and nearly $870 for units. Federal Liberal MP for Durack Melissa Price linked the rent increases to insufficient state investment in housing stock. The article also highlights reliance on the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme, warning that immigration and policy changes could complicate workforce availability, while emphasizing that Broome is far from national decision centers like Perth and Canberra.
