Virginia Democrats fell short of their redistricting hopes but still flipped two House seats Tuesday, with a potential third pickup undecided late Wednesday. After aiming to win 10 of 11 seats with new maps, Democrats instead won under existing boundaries by ousting Republican incumbents in Virginia’s 1st and 2nd districts. They trailed in the 5th and lost the 6th, according to results discussed by Gov. Abigail Spanberger. Spanberger said the redistricting debate overshadowed parts of her affordability agenda, but she credited Democratic candidates and local party organizations for the wins. Republican Rep. John McGuire declared victory in the 5th, while Democrat Tom Perriello urged that ballots still be counted; as of Wednesday afternoon, the Associated Press had not called the race. Virginia Elections Commissioner Steve Koski said results remain pending until certification, scheduled for Dec. 7.
