Strikes Iran in response to a drone attack on a ship

The U.S. struck Iran on Friday in response to a drone attack a day earlier on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, escalating a fragile period of talks. The action followed an interim understanding reached last week between Washington and Tehran aimed at ending months-long hostilities and reopening the key waterway. President Donald Trump said the drone attack violated the ceasefire, and U.S. Central Command reported strikes on missile and drone locations and coastal radar sites in Iran. Trump had told reporters earlier, “You’ll find out,” whether the U.S. would respond, and later said Iran was “a little bit different.” Iran’s parliament security committee chief Ebrahim Azizi replied on social media that the Strait of Hormuz is governed by Iran and cautioned against mistaking “control for escalation.” Vice President J.D. Vance urged Iran to “pick up the phone,” adding, “But violence will be met with violence.” The strikes ended about an hour after Central Command’s announcement. Britain said a container ship was hit off Oman on Thursday and reported no injuries. The International Maritime Organization paused evacuations and said they would not resume without guarantees, with around 115 ships having exited and about 500 still in the area.
