Taipei Times reports that recalls tied to Central Union oil contamination have reached 17.422 tonnes after regulatory action in Taiwan. The Food and Drug Administration said the contamination affected 18 products across 30 production batches, with recalls completed so far for six products totaling 17.422 tonnes. FDA Director-General Chiang Chih-kang said the issue was detected after Central Union Oil Corp notified authorities on Tuesday night, finding benzopyrene levels of 8.1 micrograms per kilogram in 1,300 tonnes of soy-based cooking oil, against a legal limit of 2 micrograms per kilogram. The affected oil was supplied between April 8 and April 10 to Taisun Enterprise, Fwusow Industry, and Formosa Oilseed Processing. The case was classified as a Category 8 food hygiene violation requiring first-level removal from the market, with a recall deadline expiring at noon that day. Benzopyrene is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by IARC.
