Gullwing doors have a way of turning any car into a photo moment, and they’re distinct from Lamborghini-style scissor doors. Instead, the gullwing design is hinged on a roof section and opens upward. While many modern vehicles use outward-swinging doors, some luxury brands like Rolls-Royce use reverse-opening doors. The earliest known gullwing example is the Bugatti Type 64 prototype, conceived in 1939 by Jean Bugatti as a successor to the Type 57. After Jean Bugatti died in 1939 and WWII and the German invasion disrupted production, the Type 64 program ended with a single prototype and two bodyless chassis models.
