The fish is in the right': Man airlifted after shark bite thought he wouldn't make it

Sebastian Achim, the Romanian angler airlifted to hospital after a shark bite off Waterford, said the helicopter may have been the difference between survival and reaching shore hours later. Achim, 27, told RTÉ he was tagging blue sharks for research when a shark jumped and latched onto his calf on the boat, ripping tissue and causing immediate bleeding. He said he didn’t know whether the incident was deliberate, adding that the crew took the hook out and threw the animal back into the water. After calling emergency services, Achim tied a rope to his leg to stem blood loss but lost consciousness about 10 minutes in. He later needed reconstructive surgery.
