Wimbledon’s centre-court spotlight turned into a breakthrough stage as Australian teenager Maya Joint faced Serena Williams in a high-profile match. At just 20, Joint met a seven-time Wimbledon champion, with Williams serving at just under 200 km/h and hitting cross-court backhands described as exceptionally punishing. Coming into the match on a rough run—having not won any of her previous 11 matches—Joint nevertheless took control and won in three sets with composure and sustained attacking play. The crowd largely favoured Williams, with notable exceptions including Joint’s mother and coach, and Samantha Stosur present. Despite Joint’s standout performance, Williams did not “crack it” for a smile, according to the account. Joint later exited the tournament in the second round, losing to Alexandra Eala in three sets after winning the first.
