Toyota launches EV sport utility vehicle bZ4X in Kenya, following South Africa and Morocco rollouts

Toyota has entered Kenya’s fully electric vehicle market with the launch of the bZ4X, marking the Japanese automaker’s first BEV in the country and signaling growing confidence in East Africa’s nascent EV sector. The rollout was announced on June 17 by CFAO Mobility Kenya, Toyota’s local distributor, and follows Morocco’s April 2026 and South Africa’s May 2026 introductions. Analysts note Africa’s EV market is expanding unevenly, with Kenya positioned as a test bed for corporate fleets, government agencies, and environmentally conscious consumers. The move underscores Toyota's cautious but expanding Africa strategy as governments embrace electric mobility.

Key specifications include a driving range of up to 516 kilometers, all‑wheel drive, fast‑charging support, and an eight‑year battery warranty. CFAO Mobility Kenya says it will leverage its network of 43 service centers to provide maintenance and after‑sales support, addressing a main owner concern. The Kenya launch comes as Africa’s BEV sales rise from about 4,000 units in 2023 to roughly 25,000 in 2025, per IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026, with Egypt leading 2023–24 totals and Morocco and South Africa contributing substantial shares.
