Trump threatens 50% tariffs on all Canadian cars, auto parts and steel

President Donald Trump threatened to raise tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts and steel to 50%, starting Jan. 1, 2027, escalating a trade dispute that followed the collapse of talks with Canada. In a Truth Social post, Trump accused Canada of imposing excessive tariffs on U.S. farmers and farm products and said the standoff contributes to a $60 billion trade deficit. He said the new 50% duties would apply to “all Cars, Trucks,” automotive parts of all sizes and steel, and called on manufacturers to build in the United States, promising “ZERO TARIFFS” for domestic production. The announcement came after the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion in Canadian imports two days earlier. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will retaliate “dollar for dollar” beginning Sept. 8, targeting items including steel, dairy, appliances, electronics and agricultural equipment.
