Uber says it has built—via partnerships and select investments—an autonomous-vehicle network spanning more than 30 companies over roughly the past two years, according to TechCrunch’s tracking. The ride-hailing giant previously developed its own tech through Uber Advanced Technologies Group (ATG) formed in 2014, after hiring dozens of researchers from Carnegie Mellon University. In 2016 it tested AVs in California, Pittsburgh and Arizona, but progress collapsed after Waymo’s trade-secrets lawsuit, Travis Kalanick’s 2017 resignation and a fatal 2018 Tempe crash involving a self-driving Volvo XC90. Uber later sold ATG to Aurora, plus stakes in other ventures, while retaining equity. In 2024–2025 it returned with new AV deals, including Aurora, Autobrains and plans for Munich robotaxis pending regulation.
