Van Hollen: Trump hit Saudi Arabia with a “bait and switch” by tying Israel relations to a nuclear deal, according to Sen. Chris Van Hollen. Speaking on ABC News’ “This Week” on Sunday, the Maryland Democrat said the administration shifted deal terms within less than 24 hours. The U.S. and Saudi Arabia struck a nuclear cooperation agreement on Wednesday that would allow uranium enrichment, opening a path for Gulf states to develop nuclear weapons capabilities. Van Hollen said Trump then made normalization with Israel a condition of the arrangement. Van Hollen argued this left partners unable to rely on signed commitments. Saudi officials have said normalization depends on a clear path to a Palestinian state, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed. The White House, through press secretary Karoline Leavitt, said Trump is the “final dealmaker.”
