VEEF: Toyota proposes new category for ICE cars using renewable fuel
Toyota has proposed a new EU vehicle category, “VEEF” (Vehicles running Exclusively on Eligible Fuels), aimed at giving cars powered by renewable fuels the same regulatory treatment as battery-electric vehicles. Toyota argues that because these models produce no CO2 at the tailpipe, they should qualify for the same incentives as EVs, helping Europe cut emissions without having to replace the roughly 300 million internal-combustion vehicles already on the road. The automaker says it has tested the approach in Spain with about 20 production-spec cars running on 100% renewable fuel for six months. Toyota partners include BMW, Bosch and Repsol, with Bosch focused on fuel traceability. VEEF proposals would block conventional petrol use and rely on fuel-nozzle detection. Toyota estimates Europe’s biomass could support ICE fleets through 2040.
