Venezuela quake toll soars as rescue crews comb rubble
Venezuela quake toll soars as rescue crews comb rubble reports that rescuers worked through the night after two major earthquakes struck areas around Caracas, with the death toll rising to 589. Interim President Delcy Rodriguez updated the figures on Friday: 589 dead and 2,980 injured following the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes, which hit about 160 km west of Caracas on Wednesday. A website tracking missing people, created with opposition leaders’ involvement in the politically polarized country, listed 49,500 people as unaccounted for, while the U.S. Geological Survey predicted more than 10,000 deaths. Spain’s foreign ministry confirmed two Spanish nationals died and another 80 were missing. In hard-hit coastal La Guaira and near the Moron epicenter in Carabobo, firefighters, soldiers and civilians searched damaged buildings, as power outages left some residents without utilities.
