Waymo taps Toyota to supply robotaxis for Japan and the U.K.
xCruzo Brief
Waymo is partnering with Toyota to supply robotaxi fleets built on the automaker’s electric bZ4X, with testing starting in Japan next year and a planned expansion to other right-hand-driving markets including the U.K. The companies announced that Toyota will manufacture 2027-model bZ4X vehicles and install Waymo’s self-driving system at Toyota’s Takaoka plant. Waymo has already been testing autonomous Jaguar I-Pace vehicles in London and plans to launch a robotaxi service there once it receives the necessary permits. The deal follows a preliminary agreement signed 18 months ago and could extend beyond ride-hailing to integrating Waymo tech into privately owned Toyotas.
