Why I spent $800 to repair my laptop (and how you can spend less)

Spending $814 to repair a nearly five-year-old 2021 14-inch MacBook Pro became, for one tech reviewer, the cheaper choice after a hinge-side drop cracked the lid and distorted audio/video. Apple’s Genius Bar said the lid component required a full $649 display replacement plus $99 labor, before taxes. The bigger lesson was warranty planning: the owner hadn’t bought AppleCare+, missing the point that in summer 2025 Apple shifted to AppleCare One monthly/annual plans for devices under four years old. Credit-card warranty add-ons didn’t extend coverage enough after they checked with Visa and Chase.
