Below' Producers Explain Why Their Show Isn't Just Netflix's 'Widow's Bay'

Below’s producers say the new series isn’t meant to mimic Netflix’s “Widow’s Bay.” Instead, they focused on authenticity—especially the Newfoundland accent. Creator/showrunner Jesse McKeown, who’s a Newfoundlander-in-law, says the show was shot entirely on location in a setting that sits between folklore and real history. Producers estimate the story is 70% science fact, while McKeown puts it closer to 90%. Executive producer Jessica Rhoades emphasizes getting the accent “100 percent right,” using local radio shows in Josh Hartnett’s prep. Viewers and Newfoundlanders are expected to notice it differently. The show’s lead, Hartnett, plays fisherman Calvin.
