The official anthem tradition began in 1994 when the United States hosted the tournament, with Gloryland by Daryl Hall and Sounds of Blackness setting a cross-genre tone. In 1998, France hosted, and Ricky Martin's The Cup of Life led the soundtrack alongside La Cour des Grands by Youssou N'Dour and Axelle Red. In 2002, two official songs appeared: Boom by Anastacia and Let’s Get Together Now by Voices of Korea/Japan.
