How Bristol became the home of drum and bass and jungle
xCruzo Brief
Bristol’s role in drum and bass and jungle traces back more than 30 years, when a “rebel” mindset helped create a sound that later became a global phenomenon. In the early 1990s, the DJ collective Full Cycle—featuring DJ Krust, DJ Die, producer Roni Siza and DJ Suv—drew inspiration from Jamaican sound systems, acid house and hip hop. Krust linked the genre’s jump in tempo to rave culture, noting growth from around 160bpm to 170bpm. Full Cycle showcased street performances at St Paul’s Carnival and later formed the live act Reprazent, becoming the first drum and bass group to win the Mercury Prize via “Brown Paper Bag.”
